Little White Books at Salford Lads Club

Little White Books are incredibly proud of our Northern heritage. We love everything about the North – that’s why we created the Great Northern Wedding Show, Great Northern Wedding Awards, and the Great Northern Wedding Venues magazine.

We’re also passionate about music (almost to the point of being obsessed!) so when we were thinking of a location for our 20th issue front cover shoot we wanted somewhere that would tick the Great Northern box, tick the wedding venue box – and as a bonus, tick the ‘music’ box too! Salford Lads Club immediately came to mind.

35 years ago, the doorway at Salford Lads Club became immortalised across the globe when Manchester band The Smiths posed in front of the building, on the corner of Coronation Street, to create the inside cover for their new album ‘The Queen is Dead’. Since then, Smiths fans and music fans from all over the world visit to have their pictures taken in front of that famous doorway, and in 2007 the Manchester Evening News reported that the building had reached third place in a UK wide hunt to find the most iconic buildings in the country.

Inside this ‘tardis’ of a building you will find a dedicated ‘Smiths Room’ which is covered from floor to ceiling in Smiths posters and memorabilia, plus thousands of doorway pictures sent in from fans, together with messages left for the legendary group. It is still a fully functioning club that continues to provide opportunities for local young people in sports and arts.

Salford Lads Club is also now a registered and licensed wedding venue. Perfect if you are looking to tie the knot in a unique setting, rich in pop culture heritage. They can offer ceremonies for between 10 and 150 guests in four different spaces, including the unique Smiths Room. It is the ideal venue for couples who are looking for a quirky, unique venue with an amazing legacy. The weddings are run in partnership between Salford Lads Club and Salford Community Leisure, with all income generated being reinvested in the local community.

Huge thanks to Leslie Holmes for all his help and assistance in making our front cover shoot happen!
